The 'Vikalp Yatra - Yatra of Alivelihoods' is a learning journey hosted in the context of 10 years of the Vikalp Sangam process and will deeply explore the significance of meaningful and regenerative livelihoods in our current times. Vikalp Sangam is an evolving process that brings together movements, groups and individuals working on just, equitable and sustainable pathways to human and ecological wellbeing. It rejects the current model of development and the structures of inequality and injustice underlying it, and searches for alternatives in practice and vision.

The Vikalp Yatra is a similar search for radical alternatives in practice and vision in various fields/sectors, exploring the possibilities of Alivelihoods these sectors offer. How alive do we feel in our current pursuit of livelihoods and life? Can our livelihoods attempt to address the growing inequities and injustices? Can there be forms of work that respond to the poly-crisis while nurturing one's self?

The Vikalp Yatra in Kerala is organised by Travellers' University from the 10th-16th of November 2024, ahead of the National Vikalp Sangam in Kachchh from November 21st-25th, which celebrates the 10th year of the Vikalp Sangam process. The learning journey aims to explore the sectors of Environment & Ecology, Media, Knowledge, Technology, Food, Conservation, Livelihoods and more.

The Vikalp Yatra is an opportunity for Malayali youth inclined towards social-ecological engagement to understand the kind of on-ground work happening in these sectors in Kerala, learn from grassroots initiatives and innovators, and expand their worldviews to journey towards the alternative futures we all hope to see.

‘Vikalp Yatra - Yatra of Alivelihoods’ offered a wonderful space to connect with a community of like-minded individuals, all looking for something beyond the mainstream. Fighting against the current is never easy, but finding a support system like this makes the journey a bit easier. The yatra reminded me of the importance of finding my community—a realization I had forgotten over the years. I also felt a deeper connection to my own culture and family. Usha Chechi spoke about how we are living the lives that people a hundred years ago dreamed for us, and maybe a hundred years from now, others will live out the dreams we have today. That thought, along with the hope created by the incredible people I met in this journey is something that would definitely stay with me.
